Surface habitat modification through industrial tuna fishery practices

چکیده
Abstract Natural floating objects (FOBs) have always been a major component of the habitat pelagic species. Since 1990s, number FOBs in open ocean has increased greatly as result introduction fish aggregating devices (FADs) by industrial tropical tuna purse seine vessels. These changes, and their potential impacts on species that associate with FOBs, remain poorly understood. Using fisheries observer data, data from satellite-linked tracking buoys attached to Lagrangian simulations, this study quantifies temporal changes density spatial distribution due use FADs Indian Ocean (IO) between 2006 2018. From 2012 2018, entire western IO is impacted, representing more than 85% overall natural less 10%, originating pollution 5%. Results also suggest both densities are lower eastern IO, but initial investigation highlights need for further studies. Our confirms modified which investigate consequences ecology associated

Parasites of Skipjack Tuna, Katsuwonus Pelamis: Fishery Implications
The numbers of 26 types of parasites were counted in 878 fish, of which all but 3 we.e from 14 areas in the Pacific. Data from the 22 most reliable parasites gave no evidence of discrete stocks of skipjack tuna in the Pacific, either when analyzed singly or when using combinations of parasites in multivariate analyses. New Zealand fish carried many tropical parasites, particularly didymozoids, ...
متن کاملBycatch in the Maldivian pole-and-line tuna fishery
Tropical tuna fisheries are among the largest worldwide, with some having significant bycatch issues. However, pole-and-line tuna fisheries are widely believed to have low bycatch rates, although these have rarely been quantified. The Maldives has an important pole-and-line fishery, targeting skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis). In the Maldives, 106 pole-and-line tuna fishing days were observed ...
متن کاملHow Habitat Degradation through Fishery Disturbance Enhances Impacts of Hypoxia on Oyster Reefs
Oysters are ecosystem engineers that create biogenic reef habitat important to estuarine biodiversity, benthic–pelagic coupling, and fishery production. Prevailing explanations for the dramatic decline of eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) during the last century overlook ecosystem complexity by ignoring interactions among multiple environmental disturbances. To explain oyster loss, we tes...
متن کاملTrade-offs in the design of fishery closures: management of silky shark bycatch in the eastern Pacific Ocean tuna fishery.
Bycatch--the incidental catch of nontarget species--is a principal concern in marine conservation and fisheries management. In the eastern Pacific Ocean tuna fishery, a large fraction of nonmammal bycatch is captured by purse-seine gear when nets are deployed around floating objects. We examined the spatial distribution of a dominant species in this fishery's bycatch, the apex predator silky sh...
متن کاملModification of surface properties of carbon-based and polymeric materials through fluorination routes: from fundamental research to industrial applications
The outstanding characteristics of fluorine gas, e.g. extreme reactivity and oxidizing power, and the utmost electronegativity of F ion, lead to very strong bonds between fluorine and most of the other elements of the periodical table. Treatments involving F2, fluorinated gases and rf plasma-enhanced fluorination (PEF) constitute exceptional tools for modifying the surface properties of materia...
